How to check a deck contractor in Lexington, KY

Kentucky has no statewide general contractor license, so in Lexington the key check is local registration.

LFUCG contractor registration

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government requires contractors to register with Building Inspection, and unregistered contractors can't get building permits. You can search permits and records on the city's Accela Citizen Access portal, or call Building Inspection at (859) 258-3770 and ask whether a company is registered.

What to ask every builder

  • Are you registered with LFUCG, and will you pull the permit? (Most attached decks in Lexington need one, see our permit guide.)
  • Certificate of insurance (liability and workers' comp if they have employees).
  • Recent local references and photos of their own work.
  • A written contract listing size, decking brand and line, railing type, stair count and payment schedule.

Outside Fayette County

Nicholasville, Georgetown, Winchester, Versailles, Richmond and Paris have their own building offices. Ask that office what registration it requires, for example see our Nicholasville deck permit page.
